We have studied the color wheel extensively and are beginning to use and understand color vocabulary. First graders are naming primary colors and learning what happens when two primary colors are mixed together. They are able to identify primary and secondary colors in selected works of art. Second graders are reviewing the elements and principles of art using flash cards to help prepare them for their art test taken at the end of the school. Fifth graders are using contrast to create two paintings of enlarged flowers that are woven together. Georgia O'Keefe's work has inspired these paintings that look abstract when completed. Fourth grade is using the high contrast of complementary colors to collage still lifes with a lot of pizazz!! Finally, third graders are learning to mix their own greens to paint plants. They are also using warm and cool colors for the background and mixing their own browns using blue and orange, one pair of complementary colors. We are making huge strides toward using color intelligently and sensitively in our work! Mayport students do great work!

About Ms. Evans

As I begin my fourteenth year at Mayport Elementary, I am anxious to begin working on exciting and challenging art projects that have connections to real world themes. I am continuing as Extended Day Director for the before and after school care program and look forward to working with parents in that role as well. Happily, I have received National Board Certification (2007) and continue to serve on the Duval Art Teachers Association Board as Past President. I also hold a position on the board of the Florida Art Education Association as Districts Assembly chair. I will be presenting a workshop at the state conference in October with Jennifer Snead, the art teacher from Chet's Creek Elementary.
